Born in Spain in 1902, Josemaria Escriva is the founder of Opus Dei, a Catholic institution which emphasizes that all of us are called to sainthood and can strive for holiness in everyday life (school, work, family, etc.). At times, throughout Escriva’s life, God’s hand seemed quite evident. For example, in 1954, Escriva was miraculously cured of diabetes, which he had suffered from for many years. Escriva's influence on the world made him a central figure in 20th-century Catholicism.
