Parents are the primary educators of their children, as stated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (Para. 1653). Moreover, the Second Vatican Council document Lumen Gentium identifies parents as the "first heralds of the faith" to their children. Unfortunately, many parents today are ill equipped to take on this role because they haven't been fully evangelized in the Christian Faith.
Building a Firm Foundation is an eight-week evangelization and formation program for parents and guardians whose children are preparing for their first sacraments. This foundational program starts at the very beginning with the kerygma, the initial Gospel proclamation that introduces each of us to Christ. Rather than focusing on Catholic doctrine, the program's goal is to stoke a desire to grow together in faith in an intentional way as a family by awakening parents to the importance of a relationship with Jesus and his Church.
Once evangelized, only then will parents be more receptive to the catechesis that will nourish and deepen the faith of their entire family. Building a Firm Foundation will awaken in parents the capacity for an active, relational faith and equip them as they - in partnership with their children's catechists - help their children prepare for their sacraments.

Author Sherry Weddell gathered fellow Church workers whose years of service in parish ministry have yielded hard-earned wisdom and enthusiasm for the work of transforming Catholic parishes into centers of apostolic outreach.
Evangelization isn't just for evangelical preachers, popes, and foreign missionaries. It's something all of us as baptized Christians can do. Through personal stories and examples, authors Dave Nodar, Dianne Davis, and Fr. Erik Arnold show that every one of us has the unique opportunity and ability to be a part of God's work.
To become an apostolic parish, there are four effective models to choose from, each built on a distinct, necessary insight and method in the art of conversion: Radical hospitality and proclamation; The practice of spiritual multiplication; Organizational mission (re)focus; Highlighting divine signs and wonders in our midst
Every fruitful, joyful, evangelizing parish should embrace the insights and methods of at least three of the four models. The Four Ways Forward not only describes each model, giving examples of how it is being used in parishes today, but offers a practical blueprint toward crafting a response to the post-Christian world, including notes on spiritual roadblocks that can get in the way.
