El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica nos dice que los padres son los primeros educadores de sus hijos. Además, el documento Lumen Gentium del Concilio Vaticano II identifuca a los padres como los "primeros heraldos de la fe" para sus hijos. Desgraciadamente, muchos padres de hoy no están preparados para asumir este papel porque no han sido plenamente evangelizados en la fe cristiana.
Construyendo un cimiento firme es un programa de evangelización y formación de ocho semanas para padres y tutores cuyos hijos se están preparando para los sacramentos. Este programa básico comienza desde el principio con el kerigma, la proclamación inicial del Evangelio que nos presenta a Cristo. Más que centrarse en la doctrina católica, el objetivo del programa es avivar el deseo de crecer juntos en la fe de forma intencional como familia, despertando en los padres la importancia de una relación con Jesús y su Iglesia.
Sólo una vez evangelizados, los padres serán más receptivos a la catequesis que alimentará y profundizará la fe de toda su familia. Construyendo un cimiento firme despertará en los padres la capacidad de una fe activa y relacional, y les preparará para que, en colaboración con los catequistas de sus hijos, ayuden a sus hijos a prepararse para los sacramentos.
